Part 2

The rest of the trip:

We got to visit with a lot of the extended family which was fun. Thanksgiving was ok but didn't seem as festive as I remember it. I have no idea what was different about it -maybe it had something to do with the fact that I haven't had Thanksgiving at my mom's house since Thanksgiving 2001. Come to think of it, I don't even know if we had it at my mom's house that year. Huh. The day after Thanksgiving we went to the tree lighting ceremony, watched the parade, and then went to Santa's house so Anthony could talk to him. The next day we went to a tree farm and helped my mom, dad, and brother pick out a tree. I left there on the 30th and had a pretty uneventful drive back home. Perfect.

And, for the last month, I haven't really been doing much of anything. I feel like I've been detoxing from the trip. Trying to get over all the fights I had with my mom; trying to get over the bad EKG results and not really feeling hopeful towards this new job at all; trying to get over all the fights Roy and I keep having; trying to get back to a normal routine... trying to figure out where I go from here.

We went to the park nearby to drive through the Festival of Lights. We've slowly been decorating the house in preparation of our Christmas in January when Roy comes home on R&R. I'm sure we'll have a ton of fun while he's here.

And that's the end of the update from me. There will be more pictures from our Michigan trip in a few days... whenever my mom sends me the CD full of pictures...

The run down

Ok, November was pretty busy for us!

We took a road trip up to Michigan on the 14th so the week or so before then I was busy packing things up, cleaning the house, getting all my paperwork in order, etc.

We had a horrible start to the trip. We ended up leaving the house 2 hours after I originally wanted to leave. Then, when we were about 5 miles away on the interstate I realized that I had not turned on the heat so I had to turn around and fix that problem. I missed almost every exit I needed to take to change interstates on the way up so, we added around an hour and a half to the drive through all of that. There was some pretty heavy fog in Pennsylvania but there weren't any traffic issues or other weather issues on the way up. For the most part the trip went well -much better than I had hoped for with taking 2 dogs and a 2 year old, in my tiny car, for what would have been a 12-13 hour ride. No one had any accidents in the car and no one got sick in the car this time, so I think it went great! It doesn't take much to make me happy. ;)

The first few days in Michigan went all right. We got quite a bit of snow so we spent a lot of time outside playing in it.

I had the PEPC (Pre employment processing center) in Kansas City, MO on November 19th so I flew out of Michigan November 18th in the evening and returned the next day. That trip was HORRIBLE.

Horrible.

My first flight (out of Detroit) was fine -on time, no issues. The flight from Chicago to KC was the start of a very bad trip. Our plane had mechanical problems so the flight got canceled. It was supposed to leave around 8pm CST. We had to wait for a different plane to fly in around midnight and didn't leave until 1/130 in the morning on the 19th. I didn't get to KC until 3/330am. *I was supposed to be at the PEPC at 9am.*

Because we got there at 3am, the shuttle service was not running --the shuttle service that I paid for through Orbitz. So, I had to get a taxi. $20 gone on the shuttle (each way) plus $50 gone on the taxi (each way).

I get to the hotel and the concierge couldn't find my reservation in the system. He let me use his computer and pull up the reservation I made -through Orbitz- and The hotel that was reserved was in Kansas City, KANSAS not Kansas City, MO. BOY. Can you see where the rest of this is going? $60 gone on the original hotel reservation plus $80 gone for the new hotel room.

I finally get in the room around 4. Shower and get in bed, probably fall asleep by 5. I set the alarm for 630 because I thought the building I needed to be at was on the opposite side of town. I end up sleeping through the alarm and waking up at 10am.

I was supposed to be there at 9.

I fight with myself for a good 10 minutes. -Should I just put on my regular clothes and go back to the airport now and just wait around until my flight?- OR -Should I get dressed and get to the PEPC late and hope that they will let me in?-

I decide to go. Get in the cab and he takes me a block -a BLOCK- away. Finally, something goes right. I get in there around 1030 and get shuffled in with the 11 o'clock group. (YAY!) I get my eyes, ears, and heart tested; I get urine taken from me; I sat through a 537 question psych evaluation; I give them all my information for the past seven years; and I get fingerprinted... twice. I walk out of there with a tentative offer (which will get confirmed in a few weeks if I passed all my tests).

Here's the bad news from the PEPC.

I had bad results on the EKG. Apparently I showed a long QT phase (google it) on the graph. I get told to go to a cardiologist (and no, I haven't done it yet) and to stop exercising. That I may be susceptible to a heart attack and may need a pacemaker. Crazy, huh? What's crazy is that I don't believe it. Yes, damnit, I'm in denial. Why? Oh, I don't know. Maybe it was due to only getting 5 hours of sleep in the 2 days prior to the test, or maybe the fact that I hadn't ate anything at all for about 20 hours by the time I had the EKG done. Or maybe it was from the stress of the horrible, horrible trip I'd just been on. Or maybe I do have it. We shall see.

So, now I'm left wondering if I will get the final offer or not. This process has been so long, and I have spent so much money going to all of these places for this job and this might be the end of the line. It all would have been a huge waste.

Back to the trip- The flight from KC to Chicago was delayed by about 2 hours. Luckily, my connecting flight from Chicago back to Detroit was also delayed (which means I didn't have to ride stand by and stay in the airport even longer). I ended up getting to Detroit just after midnight on the 20th (should've been there around 10pm on the 19th). I ended up playing Marco Polo with my damn car in the parking garage, after midnight, in 32 degree weather, after a horrible trip -me on the 3rd floor of the garage and the car on the 2nd. I ended up leaving the parking area after midnight and I ended up paying for three days in the garage instead of two. This just topped off the trip for me. I spent so much above what I planned it wasn't even funny.

Thankfully, the trip back to my mom's house, about 1.5 hours away, went smoothly.

And, that's where I'm going to leave off cause it's time for dinner. I'll write more tonight after the muchacho goes to sleep.
